Homemade Herbie's Chermoula Spice Mix
A North African spice blend that adds depth and warmth to various dishes. Chermoula is traditionally used in tagines, stews, and as a marinade. This homemade version allows for customization and flexibility in recipes.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoon cumin seeds
- 1 tablespoon coriander seeds
- 0.5 teaspoon paprika
- 0.25 teaspoon garlic powder
- 0.125 teaspoon chili flakes
- 0.5 teaspoon oregano
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest
- 0.25 teaspoon salt
- 0.125 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat a small dry skillet over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and coriander seeds. Stir frequently until the seeds are fragrant and lightly toasted, about 3-4 minutes.
- Remove the skillet from heat and let the seeds cool slightly.
- Transfer the toasted seeds to a spice grinder or mortar and pestle. Add paprika, garlic powder, chili flakes, oregano, lemon zest, salt, and pepper. Grind the mixture into a well-combined blend.
- Store the chermoula spice mix in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 6 months.
