Homemade Powdered Jamaican Seasoning Blend
Learn how to make a bold, flavorful homemade spice blend from scratch with no additives or fillers, just pure Jamaican flavor. Created by Feed & Teach, this all-purpose seasoning uses simple aromatics like onion, garlic, ginger, and Scotch bonnet peppers that are dehydrated and blended into a versatile powder perfect for meat, fish, jerk, curry, and soups.
Ingredients
- 1.000 small Red onion
- 1.000 small White onion
- 1.000 stalk Celery
- 4.000 stalks Escallion (green onion)
- 1.000 bulb Garlic
- 1.000 thumb-sized piece Ginger
- 2.000 whole Scotch bonnet peppers
- 2.000 stalks Basil
- 0.250 cup Pimento (allspice)
- 0.250 cup Salt
- 1.500 tablespoon Sugar
- 2.000 tablespoon Paprika
Instructions
- Prepare all aromatics and vegetables by slicing the red onion, white onion, celery, garlic cloves, ginger, and escallion into thin, even pieces.
- Arrange the sliced aromatics and whole Scotch bonnet peppers on dehydrator trays or baking sheets.
- Dehydrate using your preferred method: oven at low temperature (around 170-200°F), a food dehydrator, or sun-drying the traditional way. Dehydration should take approximately 4 hours or until completely dry and crispy.
- Add the pimento (allspice) during the final stage of dehydration to ensure it dries properly.
- Once all ingredients are completely dry, transfer them to a high-powered blender (such as a Vitamix).
- Blend the dried aromatics and allspice into a fine powder.
- Add salt, sugar, and paprika to the blended mixture.
- Pulse or blend until all ingredients are well combined into a uniform, fine seasoning powder.
- Store in an airtight container for long shelf life.
